Walmart Recalls Over 12,000 Cartons of Chicken Broth Due to Packaging Concerns
Walmart recently announced a recall of more than 12,000 cartons of its Great Value brand chicken broth due to potential packaging failures that may compromise product sterility. The recall was initiated on December 11, 2024, but the official notice was posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website on January 8, 2025.
The affected product is sold in 48-ounce containers with a “best used by” date of March 25, 2026, and carries the UPC code “007874206684.” A total of 2,023 cases, each containing six cartons, were distributed to 242 Walmart stores across nine states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
According to the FDA announcement, the packaging defects could lead to spoilage by compromising sterility, but no illnesses have been reported.
Walmart emphasized its commitment to customer safety. “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson stated. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted products from the select stores and are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”
Customers who purchased the recalled product are advised to discard it and request a full refund. Unopened, shelf-stable chicken broth can last for years, but opened products should be refrigerated and consumed within three to four days, or frozen for up to three months, according to the USDA.
