Gov. Greg Abbott Orders Flags at Full-Staff in Texas for Trump’s Inauguration, Defying Biden’s Proclamation

Austin, Texas — Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Monday that flags at the Texas Capitol and all state government buildings would be flown at full-staff on Jan. 20, the day of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. The move directly contrasts with a White House proclamation ordering U.S. flags to remain at half-staff for 30 days following the Dec. 29 death of former President Jimmy Carter.

“While we honor the service of a former president, we must also celebrate the service of an incoming president and the bright future ahead of the United States of America,” Abbott said in a statement.

Carter, the 39th U.S. president and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away at the age of 100. On the day of his death, President Joe Biden issued a directive for flags at federal and public buildings to be flown at half-staff for 30 days as a mark of respect.

Abbott, a Republican and staunch Trump ally, acknowledged Carter’s contributions and the significance of the national tribute but emphasized the importance of recognizing a new chapter in U.S. leadership.

“As we unite our country and usher in this new era of leadership, I ordered all flags to be raised to full-staff at the Texas Capitol and all state buildings for the inauguration of President Trump,” Abbott stated.

The governor did not clarify if flags in Texas would revert to half-staff on Jan. 21.

The decision follows remarks by Trump criticizing Democrats for being “giddy” over the timing of Carter’s national tribute. Trump suggested that the lowering of flags during his inauguration could be perceived as disrespectful.

“They think it’s so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don’t love our Country, they only think about themselves,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it.”

Abbott’s order marks a significant divergence from federal guidelines, underscoring the politically charged atmosphere surrounding the transfer of power.
