Jim Justice Sworn In as U.S. Senator, Marking New Chapter in Public Service
Just one day after handing over the West Virginia Governor’s Mansion keys to Patrick Morrisey, Jim Justice officially began his six-year term in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. Justice took the oath of office in the U.S. Senate Chamber, administered by Senate President Pro Tempore Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and accompanied by U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.
Justice’s swearing-in marked a continuation of his public service career, transitioning from a two-term governorship to representing West Virginia on Capitol Hill.
“Senator Justice was an outstanding two-term Governor of West Virginia, and I am thrilled to welcome him to his next chapter of public service here in the Senate,” Capito stated.
Justice emphasized his eagerness to collaborate with Capito, his fellow Senate colleagues, and former President Donald Trump’s administration, stating:
“It’s time to put America on the right path, and that’s the reason I’m here.”
Justice secured his Senate seat in November after defeating former Wheeling mayor Glenn Elliott in the general election. His campaign enjoyed strong support from the National Republican Senatorial Committee and GOP leaders, including Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham.
A Legacy of Leadership
Justice’s governorship ended on Sunday at midnight after the ceremonial swearing-in of his successor, Patrick Morrisey, on Monday. The inauguration ceremony also featured former governors Joe Manchin and Earl Ray Tomblin.
Justice delayed his Senate swearing-in until after Morrisey’s inauguration, avoiding a temporary vacancy in the Governor’s Office and ensuring a smooth transition of power.
Strengthening GOP Senate Majority
Justice’s election to the Senate strengthens the Republican majority, now standing at 52 members, with Ohio expected to appoint a replacement for outgoing U.S. Sen. JD Vance, who will become vice president on January 20.
“Senator Justice played a pivotal role in flipping the Senate majority to Republicans,” Capito noted. “Together, we can work in tandem to implement the changes West Virginians demanded at the ballot box in November.”
A Unified Vision for West Virginia
Capito and Justice have pledged to work together to advance priorities for West Virginia, focusing on economic development, infrastructure, and aligning with the Trump administration’s agenda.
With his long-standing ties to the state and a history of public service, Justice steps into his Senate role with a commitment to delivering for the people of the Mountain State.
