As snow, wind, and low temperatures strike the metro region on Thursday, Multnomah County will maintain six severe weather shelters available during the day and open two more overnight.
On Friday, the shelters will stay open until at least noon.
According to county officials, 356 individuals spent Tuesday night in the shelters and 285 people spent Monday night in the cold weather shelters.
As the wind increased and the temperature dropped into the mid-20s on Wednesday night, that number soared to 489.
On Thursday morning, snow fell in the Portland region. By the afternoon, the snow that fell in the morning could convert to freezing rain, according to forecasters.
According to a statement from Chair Jessica Vega Pederson, “these prolonged freezing temperatures with the potential for freezing rain, ice, and snow are extremely hazardous and require our entire community to respond.”
