After several collisions on Thursday morning and afternoon, a section of Interstate 84 was closed to traffic west of Hood River for many hours.
At about 8 p.m., it reopened.
Beginning at 10:45 a.m., authorities reported that over eight crashes were caused by winter road conditions. Authorities closed the interstate’s westbound lanes between Multnomah Falls and Hood River after the crashes happened in a four-mile stretch near the falls.
According to Oregon State Police, four people were sent to nearby hospitals with minor injuries. Ryan McCrary, a spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation, said about two dozen cars were directly involved in the pileup and probably required towing.
Authorities said one SUV caught fire.

At first, officials said that the pileup involved 100 automobiles. The majority of those cars were in the restricted road segment, but they weren’t directly engaged in any collisions, McCrary explained.
Road closures in eastern Oregon were also caused by dangerous road conditions. Early in the afternoon, sections of I-84 between La Grande and Ontario were closed; however, by 3:30 p.m., they were reopened.
