This week, two 17-year-olds were taken into custody by police in a hotel parking lot in the Parkrose district of Northeast Portland while brandishing three modified handguns.
On Monday, officers found the two in the 9500 block of Northeast Sandy Boulevard, in the parking lot of an Econo Lodge.
Three handguns with extended magazines and accessories that change gun trigger systems to enable fully automatic firing were discovered by police in their vehicle. According to authorities, the 17-year-olds were brought to the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center on allegations of unlawfully possessing a machine gun.
The arrests, according to the police, happened when East Precinct and North Precinct officers were policing the Sandy Boulevard and 82nd Avenue corridors to deal with local livability issues and criminal activities.
The three most recent killings in 2024 all took place in the Quality Inn motel parking lot near to Northeast 82nd Avenue, off Northeast Sandy Boulevard.
