Learn from the man behind this bucket-list garden at Plant Nerd Night

For many years, gardeners all over the world have made a trip to Great Dixter’s breathtaking grounds a top priority.

A 15th-century house, a 16th-century building, and 1912 additions by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens—who also created the original garden that draws crowds of tourists every year—are all part of the grounds, which first achieved international renown under the care of gardener and author Christopher Lloyd.

However, it turns out that a very significant portion of Great Dixter will be in Portland on March 10 if you are not going to catch a plane to travel to East Sussex, UK, very soon.

Under the sponsorship of The Hardy Plant Society of Oregon, Fergus Garrett, the head gardener at Great Dixter since 1993 and the chief executive since 2006, will give a talk at Roosevelt High School about long-season gardening.

In addition to discussing Great Dixter, Garrett, the recipient of the 2019 Victoria Medal of Honor, the highest honor bestowed by the Royal Horticultural Society, will concentrate on how Northwest gardeners can use woodland plants and bulbs to help fill in the gaps in perennial and mixed borders, ensuring that color continues to flourish in the garden well into early fall.

With an eye toward a longer season of color in the garden, he will also discuss plant selection, shape, texture, underplanting, interplanting, and which plants can be cultivated in the same place.
