Colleges plead for $5M to retain workers who help needy students obtain food stamps, help for basic needs

Advocates for higher education are hoping to persuade Oregon lawmakers to allocate $5 million to continue funding campus benefits navigators, who have assisted almost 40,000 college students in finding housing, food, and other necessities over the past three years.

In 2021, Oregon lawmakers mandated that all public colleges and universities employ a benefits navigator to assist low-income students in obtaining government, community, and college benefits that could support their continued education, including as food stamps and rental aid.
