Intel alumni raise $21.5 million for Portland computing startup

Four former Intel architects founded AheadComputing last year, and the business said Wednesday that it has raised $21.5 million in its first round of funding.

According to the firm, its revolutionary microprocessor architecture can enable quicker, more energy-efficient performance by reducing bottlenecks in central processing units, which are the brains inside computers.

In a statement on Wednesday, CEO Debbie Marr stated, “With this funding, we will accelerate the development of our core IP and grow our world-class engineering team, enabling customers to meet their most demanding computing needs.”

Marr had been in charge of Intel’s advanced architecture development until last year. In order to launch AheadComputing, she quit the chipmaker in July after joining in 1989. Mark Dechene, Srikanth Srinivasan, and Jonathan Pearce, her three cofounders, all worked at Intel for a long time.

According to AheadComputing, it has 40 employees. When asked if the startup had a physical office or how many of those are in Portland, the startup did not immediately reply. The great majority of AheadComputing’s employees are Intel alumni, according to their social media profiles.

Despite being the biggest employer in the technology sector in Oregon, Intel has hardly ever produced new local spinoffs or startups. Although they are rare, these startups are not unheard of.

Ten years ago, two former Intel security researchers founded Eclypsium, one of Oregon’s best-funded startups. Including a $45 million round last month, it has raised $85 million.
