In November, the Portland State Vikings will play their first home football game at Providence Park, their first visit to the downtown stadium since 2018.
The arena, which is around a mile from the Vikings’ practice field but is now largely home to the city’s professional soccer teams, the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns, will host Portland State’s homecoming game against the Big Sky-dominant Montana Grizzlies on November 15.
Portland State football will continue to play its home games at Hillsboro Stadium, but a new deal between PSU and the Timbers might see more Vikings games played at Providence Park in the future.
In a statement, Portland State President Ann Cudd stated that PSU is dedicated to doing all within our power to revitalize downtown Portland. Playing Vikings football in the center of our city creates new opportunities for connection, and it has always been a thrilling fall activity.
From 1967 until 2018, Portland State football was a regular presence at Providence Park; however, for the majority of that time, the stadium was known as Multnomah Stadium, Civic Stadium, PGE Park, and Jeld-Wen Field. Due to renovations at the downtown stadium, the Vikings played their seasons in 2000 and 2010 at Hillsboro Stadium. The remainder of the season was spent at Hillsboro Stadium, where PSU has played ever since defeating Northern Colorado at Providence Park on October 13, 2018.
In a statement, Timbers CEO Heather Davis said, “We are thrilled to welcome the Vikings back to Providence Park, which has a special place in the history of Vikings football, for the Montana game.” We’re excited to see the community rally around Portland State and another significant event in downtown Portland.
During the 2022 season, Oregon State defeated Montana State in a college football game played at Providence Park in September.
The full 2025 calendar for Portland State will be made public on Thursday. Malik Thirdgill can be reached [email protected] if you would want to renew your season ticket or make a new season ticket deposit.
