Minnesota Ranked Among Top States to Raise a Family, Gov. Walz Credits Policy Successes
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota has been recognized as one of the top states to raise a family, ranking second in a recent study by WalletHub. Governor Tim Walz announced the accolade on Friday, attributing the ranking to the state’s commitment to key areas like housing affordability, health care quality, safety, and education.
“Making Minnesota the best state to raise a family has been my mission since day one,” said Governor Walz. “Investments in education, tax cuts to the middle class, paid family and medical leave, and public safety have set us apart as an example for how to make life easier for working families. I’ll protect these investments, and I won’t stop fighting until we are number one.”
The WalletHub study compared all 50 states using metrics that reflect quality of life for families. Minnesota’s second-place ranking reflects strong performance across several indicators.
The recognition follows a busy 2024 legislative session, during which Minnesota lawmakers passed a range of family-focused policies, including:
- Tougher penalties for straw gun buyers.
- Reforms to the child welfare system aimed at reducing racial disparities.
- Expanded insurance coverage for abortion, gender-affirming care, wigs, orthotics, and prosthetics.
Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan emphasized the administration’s focus on family-centered policies. “Children and families are at the center of everything we do,” said Flanagan. “Through smart investments in universal school meals, paid family and medical leave, affordable housing, and a nation-leading Child Tax Credit, Minnesota has become one of the best states in the country to raise a family. I’m so proud of this recognition.”
The state’s leadership has pledged to continue prioritizing policies that enhance quality of life for families, aiming to move Minnesota to the top of the list.
