Gun battle erupts in NE Portland residential neighborhood; more than 30 shots fired in street

A person in the street and a person in a car got into what looked to be a gunfight Tuesday afternoon, resulting in over 30 rounds being fired in a quiet neighborhood in Northeast Portland.

Witnesses reported that the incident occurred just before 12:45 p.m. at the junction of Northeast Going Street and 12th Avenue.

Terri Wallo Strauss, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau, stated in an email that preliminary investigation suggests two vehicles were involved. At least one individual in at least one of the cars fired a gun, Strauss continued.

The incident did not result in any reported injuries, and no one has been taken into custody.

Handyman Dannail Rhone, who was working in the yard of a property close to the shooting scene, claimed to have heard the gunfire while standing by the front door of the house.

He claimed to have witnessed a man wearing a mask in the middle of the road shooting at a car with an assault-style rifle. There was what looked like an extended magazine attached to the gun. A gun was also fired by someone inside the vehicle, Rhone added.

He claimed that the automobile drove away before the cops arrived and that the shooter fled on foot right after the altercation.

Some locals expressed surprise that an apparent gunfight had taken place in the middle of a residential street during the day, while others who heard the shooting described it as sounding like automatic gunfire.

Near each of the shell shells discovered at the shooting scene, police positioned over 30 evidence markers at the intersection. The shells were a combination of as-yet-unidentified rifle rounds and 9 mm casings, a smaller-caliber ammo commonly seen in pistols, according to a Portland Police Bureau detective who spoke to The Oregonian/OregonLive.

According to police, the shooting is still being investigated.
