Health Crisis in San Antonio: 'Four Horsemen' of Illness Strike Hard

“Doctors Warn of ‘Four Horsemen’ of Illness Sweeping Through San Antonio”

SAN ANTONIO, TX — If it feels like everyone around you is getting sick, you’re not imagining things. Health experts are sounding the alarm about an unusual surge in four major illnesses, dubbed “The Four Horsemen,” currently affecting people across San Antonio.

A Surge in Infections Across All Ages

Dr. Stephen Ramirez of Stone Oak Family Practice says the uptick in cases began several weeks ago, and it’s hitting people of all ages.

One in four of my patients right now come in because they’re having some sort of infection that’s interfering with their life,” he shared.

These illnesses include the flu, norovirus, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with each presenting its own challenges.

The Flu’s Continued Impact

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu has already affected 9.1 million people this season, resulting in approximately 110,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths.

Classic flu symptoms include headache, fever, and muscle aches, which can significantly disrupt daily activities.

Norovirus on the Rise

Norovirus, known for causing stomach issues such as vomiting and diarrhea, is another culprit in the surge of illnesses.

Dr. Ramirez explained, “It’s more of a gastroenteritis virus. Symptoms typically last two to three days but can be very disruptive.”

The Domino Effect on Communities

The ripple effects of these illnesses are being felt beyond the doctor’s office.

Christina Serrano, a local patient, described her recent battle with a virus that left her with stomach problems and fatigue for a week. “It kind of reminded me of COVID, but I didn’t test myself for it,” she said.

For small businesses, the impact is even more pronounced. “When it’s a small business, and all your employees are out, then it’s a problem,” Serrano added.

Preventive Measures to Stay Healthy

Dr. Ramirez emphasizes the importance of taking precautions to protect yourself and others during this surge of illnesses.

  • Wear a mask for the next few weeks, especially in crowded areas.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Avoid shaking hands; use your elbows for greetings instead.

As San Antonio grapples with the rise of these “Four Horsemen” illnesses, proactive measures can help curb the spread and keep communities healthy.
