How much you need to earn to be upper middle class in every state, including Oregon

What does having wealth mean? Poor? In the middle?

That was the concept behind a new analysis from GoBankingRates.com that examined the amount of money you would need to make in each state to be above the bottom but below the upper.

GoBankingRates looked into the income requirements for being in the upper middle class, which is defined as the top 20% of middle-class earners in each state. People with incomes two-thirds to twice the local median were considered middle-class.

The investigation revealed that the upper middle class differed greatly depending on one’s location. For instance, you will be considered upper middle class in Mississippi if your household income is $91,841. To obtain the same classification in Maryland, however, you would need to pay $170,666.

The typical household income in Alabama is $59,609. In Alabama, you must earn at least $103,322 per year for your household to be considered upper middle class.

According to GoBankingRates.com, the upper middle class household income level in Oregon was $132,829, while the median household income was $76,632. The values were derived from 2022 data.
