Eugene In 2025, Oregon baseball won their first home game for the 12th consecutive year.
In front of 2,187 fans at PK Park on Friday afternoon, the No. 12 Ducks defeated Toledo 9–2 behind the efforts of Jacob Walsh, who went 2 for 5 with three RBIs to lead four batters with multiple hits.
“We succeeded in cleaning baseball one day,” Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski remarked. We released a good product tonight, in my opinion. It was finished. We played good defense, in my opinion. I saw no signs of stress or anything similar when the game got tight. We got some clutch performances, I thought.
Mason Neville (2 for 4) was driven in by Walsh for the season’s first run as Oregon started with three consecutive singles.
Tre Mariano of Toledo tied the score at one in the second inning with a 1-0 fastball from Grinsell to left.
Grinsell, who walked two and struck out seven in 5.0 innings, gave up just one hit. In the no-decision game, the junior left-hander threw 74 pitches.
Knowing that they have faith in me to show up here on Opening Day, perform what I do, and go for the zone is undoubtedly a comforting feeling, Grinsell said. tried to go out there and establish expectations for the other three starters this weekend for the opposing club.
In the sixth, Walsh gave the Ducks a 3-1 lead with a two-run home run off a 1-2 pitch to left. Last season, Oregon’s home run leader took advantage of a changeup that he took to the other field.
Walsh remarked, “I missed one just before it.” I thought, “Oh, sweet,” when he threw another one.
Wasikowski was happy to see that the senior first baseman was sitting back on an off-speed pitch.
That is an older at-bat, and Wasikowski stated that we had not previously witnessed that kind of at-bat from Jacob. We occasionally saw it, but lately we’ve noticed it more frequently, and he’s developing. Brett Thomas, the director of player development, and Jack Marder, the hitting coach, deserve praise for it.
After Mariano swung out, the Rockets scored a run on a passed ball in the seventh.
Carter Garate smoked an opposite field RBI double to make it 4-2, capping a streak of three consecutive hits for Oregon in the bottom of the inning. Luke Walton of Toledo denied Neville a three-run home run, but a sacrifice fly put the score at 5-2.
In the eighth inning, Maddox Malony and Jack Brooks (2 for 4) hit consecutive singles, and with a balk plating Brooks and a throwing error allowing Malony to score, Oregon broke it open with four runs. To make it 9-2, Neville doubled in RBI and Drew Smith singled in RBI.
Brooks, who earned his fourth career start, stated, “I love being out there being out with the guys and being able to provide any way I can.” There is nothing wrong with our lineup. We have one of the best lineups I’ve ever seen, in my opinion. Being out there with those guys is really awesome.
In 2.0 innings, Ryan Featherston won the victory by striking out three batters and giving up an unearned run on two hits. In a save of 2.0 innings, Seth Mattox hit a batter, walked one, and struck out two.
Five of Toledo’s pitchers, including two relievers, were thrown to Oregon’s three for a single out each.
In a no-decision game, Jacob Tabor pitched 3.2 innings, gave up one run on four hits and one walk, and struck out four. In the defeat, Nathan Leininger struck out five batters in 2.1 innings while giving up two runs, one earned, on one hit and one hit batter.
According to Wasikowski, “they threw a lot of really good arms at us today.” An All-American was thrown to start. On opening night, they tossed three other individuals who were moving at 94 miles per hour. Toledo threw some extremely nice arms out there tonight. For strikes, they all threw supplementary pitches.
The clubs will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. to conclude the four-game series.
