Due to milder temperatures and a lower wind chill, Portland and Multnomah County severe weather shelters that opened earlier this week will close on Saturday, the county announced.
On Friday night, over 920 individuals remained at the severe weather shelters in eight counties and two cities.
Multnomah County and Portland will open 200 winter overnight shelter beds tonight, in addition to almost 3,000 year-round shelter beds.
According to county regulations, cold weather shelters are required to open if forecasts indicate that temperatures will drop below 25 degrees for more than four hours overnight, that temperatures will be at or below freezing with strong winds and heavy precipitation, or that at least one inch of snow is expected to fall.
Washington County
According to the county website, Washington County will also close its two emergency shelters on Saturday.
This week, they served 116 people.
Keep checking in on your neighbors, please. Call 9-1-1 if you see someone whose life seems in jeopardy. Otherwise, the website advises calling the police non-emergency number at 503-629-0111 and requesting a welfare check if you encounter someone you are worried about during chilly weather.
Clackamas County
For the most of the winter, Clackamas County has operated an emergency weather shelter in Oregon City. Until otherwise announced, it will reopen every night.
