UPDATE: The Beavers defeated the Rebels 16-0 thanks to a strong lineup and a spectacular debut from rookie right-hander Dax Whitney.Go here for a summary.
At Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Arizona, on Saturday, the No. 7 Oregon State Beavers take on the UNLV Rebels in a college baseball game.
Eleven a.m. is the scheduled time for the first pitch.
The Beavers are playing their second game of the season after defeating the Xavier Musketeers 8-3 in a comeback on Friday.
With only one hit and one run through 7 1/3 innings, OSU struggled to get out to a strong start in the first game. There was a frustrating stretch when Xavier pitchers retired 15 straight Beavers.
However, Oregon State came alive in the last two offensive innings, hitting three home runs and scoring seven runs. The late-game pyrotechnics were fueled by a two-run, game-winning homer from Washington transfer shortstop Aiva Arquette in the seventh inning and back-to-back home runs from Jacob Krieg and Wilson Weber in the eighth.
This is the Beavers’ eleventh meeting with UNLV and their first since OSU’s 6-1 victory over the Rebels in the Corvallis Regional in 2014. In the series, Oregon State has a six-game winning streak.
Today marks the Oregon State debut of freshman Dax Whitney, a top-tier professional talent who declined first-round compensation to play for the Beavers.
The 6-foot-5 right-hander, who Perfect Game ranked as the fifth-best freshman in the country, has a four-pitch repertoire that includes a deadly 12-to-6 curveball and a fastball that reaches 98 mph.
