No. 9 Oregon State baseball vs. Baylor Bears: Preview, starting lineup, how to watch

At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, the No. 9 Oregon State Beavers take on the Baylor Bears on Friday night in a collegiate baseball game.

The first pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.

At the College Baseball Classic, a four-team round-robin competition that also includes the Auburn Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Bears, the Beavers are playing their first of three games.

Oregon State enters the tournament on a two-game losing streak. It had a 7-2 victory over then-No. 2 Virginia in the Round Rock Classic opening, capping an outstanding start to the season with five resounding victories.

However, the Beavers lost back-to-back games to Oklahoma and Minnesota after earning that resume-builder in the first meeting between the top 10 teams this season, as their hitting and bullpen both struggled.

Therefore, there is extra significance to this three-game series that follows a 17-day, 10-game season-opening tour.

OSU LHP Nelson Keljo (0-0, 2.25 ERA) vs. LHP Ethan Calder (2-0, 0.75 ERA) are the likely starters.

That and this:This is Keljo’s third start of the season after he was selected as the Friday night starter during preseason camp. In his first two starts, he has pitched four innings each, alternating between outbursts of wildness and glimpses of dominance. The junior left-hander, who stands six feet four, has struck out eight batters while giving up just two runs and three hits. However, he has also hit a batter and walked nine. Both of the Beavers’ Friday games this season have employed a piggy-pack tactic, starting Keljo in the first game of their first two series alongside sophomore right-hander Eric Segura. Last year, Segura was the team’s Sunday starter. He has won both games, giving up just one run and five hits in six innings while striking out eleven. Against Virginia, he was particularly effective, recording eight strikeouts in 3 1/3 scoreless innings. For the second consecutive year, the Beavers are playing at Globe Life Field, the Texas Rangers’ home field. Last year, they finished 3-1, losing to Arkansas (5-4) but winning against Texas Tech (10-4), Michigan (11-1) and Oklahoma State (8-1). The Beavers’ lineup struggled past weekend, scoring runs in just four of their 18 innings after a scorching start to the season. In the two losses, OSU hit.215 with 13 hits and eight runs. In three of its first five games, it had scored eight runs or more. Trent Caraway and shortstop Aiva Arquette did not contribute to the skid. Over the course of the losses, the top-of-the-order sluggers combined for seven hits, six RBIs, four runs scored, two home runs, and a double. In each of the seven games this season, they have hit safely. In each of the seven games, Tyce Peterson and Easton Talt have made it to base without incident. Last weekend, the Beavers’ bullpen as a whole struggled, giving up 12 runs on 12 hits and seven walks in 9 2/3 innings. This is the first encounter between Oregon State and Baylor since the College World Series in 2005, and the second overall. In 10 innings, the Bears defeated the Beavers 4-3 thanks to a two-out bloop single. Despite winning seven of its first eight games by a total score of 62-23, conference coaches predicted that Baylor would finish 13th out of 14 teams in the Big 12. In his first two appearances, both of which were victories, Calder, the Bears’ Friday night starter, has given up just six hits and one earned run while striking out 15 batters. In terms of ERA (2.15), Baylor’s pitching staff is ranked 10th in the country.
