Oregon man who placed clandestine camera in shower gets lengthy prison term

A Eugeneman was given a 14-year sentence in federal prison on Wednesday for hiding a camera behind a shower overflow drain for almost a year in order to take naked pictures of a girl.

Jacob Deeter was informed by U.S. District Judge Mustafa T. Kasubhai that it is simply unacceptable to prey on children. Your actions were something that no young child should ever have to deal with. It was also a profound betrayal.

In October, Deeter, 40, entered a guilty plea to the charge of transporting child pornography.

Adam E. Delph, an assistant U.S. attorney, requested that Deeter be sentenced to 14 years in prison for abusing a child under his supervision. From August 2021 to October 2022, the mother of the girl resided with Deeter.

Irina Hughes, an assistant federal public defender, requested an 11-year, 3-month sentence. According to her, her client was abusing narcotics at the time.

According to the prosecutor, Deeter set up the camera behind the shower wall, angled it to record through a screwhole drain, and took roughly 70 movies of the 15-year-old girl over the course of eight months. He moved a few of the pictures on his cell phone.

On October 14, 2022, the girl’s mother, who was dating Deeter, claimed to Eugene police that she had found a picture of her daughter on Deeter’s laptop. “It was an accident, a stupid mistake,” Delph said in a sentencing memo after she confronted him.

When Eugene police used a warrant to examine Deeter’s house, a detective found that one screw was missing from the bathtub overflow drain. Detectives located a panel behind it, and upon removing it, they uncovered a concealed camera system with a black Ethernet cord with an adaptor end exposed and an extension cord tied around a water pipe.

According to the prosecutor, Deeter removed screws from a wall panel adjacent to the toilet and installed a camera within the access wall and against the rear of the bathtub in February 2022, as evidenced by movies that police discovered on Deeter’s hard drive.

According to the investigation, Deeter split up at least one video into almost 2,000 still images of the girl, some of which he then saved to his phone.

The girl typically stayed at her father’s house, but occasionally she and her mother would stay at Deeter’s house. According to the prosecutor, she also claimed that Deeter sent her sexually graphic notes and repeatedly exposed himself to her.

Deeter claimed that while in detention and waited for the case’s verdict, he had time to reflect over his offense.

“There is no justification,” he stated. I accept complete accountability for my deeds.
