Portland Winterhawks

Against the Kamloops Blazers on Wednesday, the Portland Winterhawks broke their losing-win-loss-win trend, albeit in the worst way. The Blazers, who are presently out of the playoffs, pulled off the upset victory, although they lost 4-2, failing to score in the final 41 minutes. They were doomed by a lack of offensive production outside of their top four or five players, which has recently started to become somewhat of a trend. They had what appeared to be a somewhat advantageous schedule at the beginning of the month, but they are now 4-6 in February with one game remaining. They are 3-3 against clubs ranked 8th or worse, and two of their victories in overtime were not very convincing.

They have two games left in Victoria as they fight for a postseason spot. They are only two points ahead of the Vancouver Giants and Tri-City Americans, despite being in fifth place. They are in a precarious situation where it is far more possible that they will face the Royals in the first round of the playoffs if they lose to Victoria twice.

37-David Hoy (40 – 5/40)
16 9-Jordan Duguay (57 – 29/57)

72-Reed Brown (55 – 10/55)

It appears that Ryan Miller has committed to the University of Denver for the 2026–2027 academic year.It seems likely that he will spend his 18th season in Portland before moving on.On or around the same day, Kyle Chyzowski committed to Denver.Chyzowski’s committment was disclosed by the Winterhawks (and/or the league), but Miller’s was not. The clear distinction is that Miller’s departure, like Diego Buttazzoni’s, leaves WHL eligibility open. With more freedom of movement between the CHL and the NCAA, it’s a different world, but it doesn’t seem proper to keep the Miller news a secret.

Chyzowski has scored three points in a row. The forwards for the Winterhawks have been struggling lately, with the exception of Chyzowski, Zakreski, Weiermair, and Buttazzoni. For the majority of people, you can say that he has scored one point in his last X games, where X is five or more.

It’s still month-to-month for Tyson Yaremko. It would be unexpected if he returned to action this season after missing 22 straight games.

Defensemen
20
27-Tyson Jugnauth (114 – 78/55)

43-Ryder Thompson (291 – 19/57)

59-Carter Sotheran (212 – 29/55)
18
12-Cole Slobodian (57 – 4/52)

7-Kayd Ruedig (56 – 17/54)

77-Max P eni ka (13 – 3/13)
16 22-Griffin Darby (47 – 5/47)

Jugnauth has scored three points in a row. You might say that every defenseman besides Jugnauth has lost by the same one point in his last X games.

Slobodian is a weekly schedule. He has missed four straight games.

Goalies

(Career games – season save%/games)
18
74-Marek Schlenker (26 – .889/26)
17 1-Ondrej t bet k (39 – .890/39)

There appears to be a high probability that both games will be played this weekend. They used to rotate goalies for a long time, but they have since stopped, probably more for the future than for performance in the here and now.

Victoria Royals

Last weekend, the Victoria Royals swept the Prince George Cougars in two games. They now lead the Cougars by five points and are poised to win the BC Division for the first time since 2015–16, when their conference championship banner should have been hanging in the ShoWare Center in Kent. They began a six-game winning streak on February 1 with a 2-1 victory over Portland. Their February record is 8-1-0-1.

16-Wyatt Danyleyko (43 – 9/42)

26-Caleb Matthews (54 – 16/50)
16 17-Nolan Stewart (51 – 19/51)

If you were aware that Brandon Lisowsky was the Western Hockey League’s most seasoned player right now, you’d get points.

Despite not scoring a goal in his last six games, Reschny, who is ranked 34 by Central Scouting, is leading the pack with a 13-game point streak. In this run, he has seven goals and twenty-one assists.

Isogai simply stood out more with the Wild than I had assumed he would have since being acquired from Wenatchee. He has a +30 record in 22 games with Victoria and has more points with the Royals.

Defensemen
19
3-Justin Kipkie (200 – 51/54)

12-Cosmo Wilson (204 – 26/54)

23-Nate Misskey (173 – 40/53)
18
2-Landon Young (116 – 8/39)

4-Seth Fryer (127 – 12/57)
17
14-Jerrett Ross (41 – 0/28)
16 18-Keaton Verhoeff (69 – 39/53)

A strong team, with Kipkie and Misskey providing valuable assistance on the power play, but no one scoring more than one point per game.

Verhoeff is fourth among 16-year-olds in terms of points.

Goalies
19
31-Johnny Hicks (8 – .918/8)
18 33-Jayden Kraus (69 – .910/41)

The Royals have recently held down the opposition’s shots while both goalies have been splitting the minutes.
