There are 17 estate tax proposals in the Oregon Legislature, 16 of which were submitted by Republicans, and many of them are simply copies of one another. Republicans claim that Oregon has the most expensive estate tax in the country, making it the most terrifying place to die. On February 10th, they aim to change that. The two revenue committees are hearing on seven of them, but the most will die in silence.
Neither resolves our estate tax’s obvious issues. The first is the $15 million estate tax loophole that was passed in 2023; the second is that Oregon does not have a gift tax.
Instead of hearing measures to widen the wealth gap, Democrats, please act to maintain an estate tax in Oregon that helps close it.
Children who are fortunate enough to have the correct parents are subject to the estate tax.
