Readers respond: Tax employers who force return to office

Automobiles contribute to pollution, traffic jams, wasted time spent behind the wheel, and discontent among workers who have been compelled by their employers to quit working remotely (Work from home? As of September 15, Oregon has the second-highest percentage of remote workers in the country. Companies should pay taxes if they permit remote work by default but nevertheless wish to make workers come into the office.

I propose requiring all such businesses to declare the total number of kilometers driven daily by their employees and to pay a fee based on that amount. That incentive could put an end to the craziness of wanting to take over people’s lives just because they can.
