Portland Opera will relocate its operations to the opposite side of the river this summer after selling its Hampton Opera Center on the southeast Waterfront last year.
The arts organization said on Tuesday that it will lease space in the World Trade Center, located near the Salmon Street Springs fountain at 121 S.W. Salmon St. in downtown Portland.
The opera will use the World Trade Center Outdoor Plaza, which most recently held Portland Winter Light Festival events, as well as administrative offices and a 200-seat inside theater.
Sue Dixon, general director of Portland Opera, stated in a press release announcing the move that it “right-sizes the opera to fit our hybrid work environment and will further connect us to the growing arts district downtown.” We can activate shows and engage more community members in our new facility, which also features an outdoor plaza and a small auditorium.
Portland General Electric, the building’s owner, will lease the space to Portland Opera. The PGE Foundation, the utility’s charitable arm, has long funded Portland Opera to Go, the opera’s educational initiative.
After more than two decades of operation, Portland Opera sold the 44,800-square-foot Hampton Opera Center, located at 211 S.E. Caruthers St., for just under $11 million in August. The purchaser was the Native American Rehabilitation Association of the Northwest, a nonprofit organization based in Portland that focuses on providing health care and substance-abuse treatment to Native populations.
This year, Portland Opera is getting ready for its 60th season, which begins on March 15 with a production of Stephen King’s The Shining. The Newmark Theatre will host those shows.
The first night is already completely booked.
