Brian Schottenheimer has been keeping an eye on Junior Adams for a while. He invited the Oregon receivers coach to join his staff once the latter was elevated to head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
Schottenheimer stated, “You can’t fail to see the guys he’s developed going back to Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua.” Investigating these guys takes a lot of time. When you get a room with him, you can see his contagious personality and his ability to teach the specifics of releases, top of the routes. I would say that he has been highly recommended for the past couple of years.
My favorite thing about Junior is his ability to simplify a highly complex position for the players, allowing them to play quickly. I’m thrilled for him because I know he’ll do a fantastic job. I’m sure he’s thrilled about the chance to make his league debut.
Earlier this month, Adams, who had been coaching the Ducks wide receivers for the last three seasons, left for his first NFL position with the Cowboys.
Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, and Ja Lynn Polk are among the former Washington receivers he recruited and coached who are currently playing in the NFL. Troy Franklin, who went on to have the finest season by a wide out in program history, was part of the receiving room Adams inherited at UO. He also added a number of transfers, notably Tez Johnson and Traeshon Holden.
“My entire game was changed by Coach Junior Adams,” Johnson stated. When I originally arrived from Troy, I didn’t do routes; instead, I simply sprinted past everyone since I was quick. As soon as I arrived, he informed me that I would need to run routes, understand coverages, and do pre-snap readings. He introduced me to Cooper Kupp. He undoubtedly changed my game and helped me a lot. One of the things you’ll never forget is getting to learn from a Super Bowl champion like Cooper Kupp and having him interact with me via text messaging.
Both Holden (45 receptions for 718 yards and five scores) and Johnson (who finished the previous season with 898 yards and 10 touchdowns) enjoyed their best seasons as collegiate athletes under Adams’ tutelage.
Holden remarked, “He taught me how to be a pro.” He was a wonderful man overall and taught me the game.
Adams was replaced as Oregon’s new receivers coach by Ross Douglas, who was hired from Syracuse.
