The electrification of the heating and cooling systems is a requirement that cannot be omitted from the topic of reducing the price of rebuilding three of Portland’s high schools (Build high schools smaller to minimize expenses, Portland school board members say, Feb. 10).
Even though all-electric equipment may cost more up front, electric systems are less expensive to purchase and run over time than natural gas systems. Additionally, buildings’ energy use is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions in the district. These buildings will require a significant investment from us taxpayers. The existing buildings are between 75 and 100 years old. Future requirements, such as low running costs and carbon emissions, must be taken into account.
